[ARCHIVED] Why are the Flags at half mast?

Flag on the Common at half mast

Please be advised that Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has ordered that the United States of America flag and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts flag be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, October 22, 2022, the date of interment, in honor of U.S. Army Cpl. Joseph John Puopolo, United States Army, Korea, formerly of East Boston, Massachusetts. 

Remains of Cpl. Puopolo, ; C Battery, 38th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division Artillery, 8th U.S. Army, (KIA, Prisoner of War), who died at age 19 on February 28, 1951 at Prisoner of War Camp #5, Korea, will be laid to rest at the Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden MA on this day.

This gubernatorial order applies to:

1.  The main or administration building of each public institution of the Commonwealth, e.g. town and city halls

2.  Other state-owned or state-controlled buildings

3.  All state military installations
